Springtime is a season of renewal and rejuvenation. After the long, cold winter months,
the arrival of spring brings with it a sense of freshness and new beginnings (insert
dramatic inhale here). The cool crisp air and longer days motivate us to get outside and
to take better care of ourselves, making this the perfect time to renew your commitment
to your personal wellness. As we do some spring cleaning and give our environment
some love, we also want to give attention to our health- physical, emotional, and social.
By nurturing these dimensions of well-being, we can achieve a more holistic and
balanced approach to our overall health and happiness, and the arrival of spring is a
great time to set goals and refresh your commitment to an all-around healthier you!
Physical Health is often the first aspect that comes to mind when we think about health,
and since we are a fitness/yoga studio- what better place to start? As the weather gets
nicer, we know that attendance in classes drop off a bit. This is totally
understandable…. BUT make sure you’re receiving your daily movement elsewhere,
preferably outside! Breathing in that crisp, fresh air can rejuvenate your mind and body,
giving you a natural energy boost making literally everything more enjoyable! Whether
you prefer a jog through the park, a hike in the hills, some yoga in your backyard, or one
of our rooftop classes, the spring air can elevate your workout experience leaving you
feeling refreshed and energized!
Alongside regular exercise, we should also ensure we are getting proper sleep at night
and eating foods that fuel our bodies. With the nicer weather, I for one find it easier to
eat lighter and healthier. As our bodies come out of hibernation mode, many of us tend
to lose those comfort food cravings and have the desire to eat more fruits and veggies.
Keep in mind that meals don’t have to be complicated! Keep some chicken or boiled
eggs in the fridge for protein and have veggies chopped and ready to be cooked or
eaten raw. Throw them together for wraps, stir-fry’s, salads, or an easy plate of protein
and veggie sticks. *Sidenote- if you need help with your nutrition, I hear April Hill is a
great health coach! ;)
Next, let’s look at emotional health. Emotional health is equally important, but often
overlooked. Take time for yourself to engage in activities that bring you joy and
relaxation. Whether it’s reading a book, meditating, gardening, taking a bath, or even
coloring, it’s important to engage in activities that allow you to decompress and focus
on you. With the arrival of Spring, this is a great time to practice earthing. Earthing, also
known as grounding, is a practice that involves connecting with the earth’s natural
energy by spending time barefoot on grass, sand, soil, or other natural surfaces. Some
of the potential benefits with earthing include, reduced inflammation, improved sleep,
stress reduction, enhanced mood, increased energy, and improved circulation. Overall,
earthing can be a simple and enjoyable way to connect with nature, reduce stress, and
promote emotional health. Next time you’re hanging out outside, kick those socks and
shoes off and let yourself to connect to the ground, drawing in all of it’s amazing energy.
Social health is another key pillar of our overall health. As humans, we are social beings
and meaningful connections with others play a significant role in our happiness and
well-being. As Nova Scotians, some of us become less social in winter, understandably
so, and we may find ourselves more isolated during the winter months. Now that spring
is here, it is the perfect time to form, or reform, strong social connections that provide us
with a sense of belonging and support. Connect with loved ones, invite an old friend out
for lunch, volunteer for a community event or organization, attend social events, and/or
try a new class at our studio *wink wink*. Speaking of social…. Have you joined our
MHF Community? This is a private facebook group for our members to connect outside
of the studio, and a place where we can keep you in the loop on all the things!
Spring is a season of rebirth and rejuvenation, making it the perfect time to start or
refresh your health journey. The invigorating spring air, longer daylight hours, and
blooming nature provide the ideal backdrop for getting outside and getting active, OR
just laying in the grass and taking in the fresh air. Get outside, set realistic goals, listen
to your body, and take time for you. Take a cue from Mother Nature and use this
season of renewal to revitalize your mind, body, and spirit in whatever ways fill your
cup!
